Aging Demographic In Florida (2001-2004):
The distribution of elder population (both over 65 year olds, and the oldest old age 85 and above) throughout the 67 counties of Florida has remained relatively stable, with Charlotte County having the largest percentage of people age 65 and over. In 2004, 2.15% of Florida’s total population consisted of people aged 85 years and older. This may be insignificant considering that it was 2.12% in 2001, but it also meant an additional 45,000 people age 85 and older. On the other hand, the percentage of population of age 65 and over decreased slightly from 18.35% to 17.60%.
In 2004, the male population of above 60 was 1,725,238, and female 2,193,289. 350,675 of them were below the poverty level, 788,562 lived alone and 2.9% were in very high needs.
